dsmltools.org is the home of the DSML Tools suite, a set of Java utilities for handling Directory Services Markup Language (DSML). It deals with both version 1 and 2. DSML is directory (LDAP) data as XML.

Note that this page merely details where to get the software required. Please read the readme (Source, Binary) for detailed installation and patching instructions. If you are using Windows, you'll need the “zip” links. Other platforms will probably want the “tarball” links.
Binary and Source Releases
Java
The DSML Tools have been tested with Java versions 1.3 and 1.4. You can download version 1.4 here. You'll need to go through their web-based interface to get at the download.

dsml.org used to be the home of the DSML v.1 specification, but it appears to have dropped off the net, to be replaced by an advertising portal. I have therefore retrieved the DSML definition files from the Wayback Machine, and present them here for your reading pleasure.

DSML (Directory Services Markup Language) is an XML dialect for directory information. A directory is a hierarchically-organised data store - in other words, a tree of data nodes. For example, a company may have organisational units, each unit will have employees, and each employee will have a name and an email address. Such hierarchically-organised data does not fit well in a database, but is much more suited to a directory.

The DSML Tools are free software, dually licensed under the Mozilla Public License (MPL) and the GNU General Public License (GPL).

So, what does that mean? Gerv wanted to make this software as accessible as possible, while keeping it free (libre). Using the MPL/GPL dual license means that most people will use the software under the MPL, and so, as well as being used in free software, it can be incorporated into proprietary products without the need to open-source the entire codebase. Given that…
